　　A Miser, to make sure of his property, sold all that he had had converted it into a GREat lumpof gold, which he hid in a hole in the ground, and went continually to visit and inspect it. Thisroused the curiosity of one of his workmen, who, suspecting that there was a treasure, whenhis master"s back was turned went to the spot and stole it away. When the Miser returned andfound the place empty, he wept and tore his hair. But a neighbor who saw him in thisextravagant grief, and learned the cause of it, said: "Fret thyself no longer, but take a stoneand put it in the same place, and think that it is your lump of gold; for, as you never meant touse it, the one will do you as much gold as the other.

"And what"s the meaning of that, now?" said the Satyr. "Oh," repliedthe Man, "my porridge is so hot, I do it to cool it." "Nay, then," said the Satyr, "from thismoment I renounce your friendship, for I will have nothing to do with one who blows hot andcold with the same mouse."

""why,"replies the other, "it was no great secret, he onlybid me have a care how I kept company with those who, when they get into a difficulty, leavetheir friends in a lurch."

But his neighbors, supposing him to beat his old sport, paid no heed to his cries, and the wolf devoured the sheep. So the boylearned, when it was too late, that liars are not believed even when they tell the truth.

　　一個(gè)放羊的孩子在離村子不遠(yuǎn)的地方放羊。他為了開(kāi)心尋樂(lè)常喊："狼來(lái)了!狼來(lái)了!"他的惡作劇有兩三次達(dá)到了目的。全村的人都跑來(lái)幫忙，而他們所得到的回報(bào)卻是一頓嘲笑，白費(fèi)了心力。最后，有一天狼真的來(lái)了。這個(gè)孩子認(rèn)真地大喊起來(lái)。但是他的鄰人們卻以為他又在耍把戲，誰(shuí)都不理會(huì)他的喊叫，于是狼把羊吃了。因此這牧童得到了教訓(xùn)：愛(ài)說(shuō)謊的人，甚至在他說(shuō)真話的時(shí)候，也沒(méi)人相信他，但是他知道得太晚了。
